12 Days of Christmas – Day 11 – Importance of the Denouement

As this year comes to a close, I have been thinking about what shows or works top my “best of” list for 2010. Well, I didn’t think too long when it came to TV shows: The Tatami Galaxy took the title easily. It occurred to me that, in fact, The Tatami Galaxy was not only my pick for 2010, it was the first one to surpass in my eyes 2006′s The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya. Other shows had come close, including 2007′s Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann and 2009/2010′s Bakemonogatari, but The Tatami Galaxy was the first both to match it and to surpass it.

Then it got me really thinking: what was it about these works that had made me hold them in such high regard? One thing that immediately popped out to me was that each one of them had a strong, focused denouement, one that not only provided satisfying closure to the events of the show but also provided a peek into the new beginning of the new beginning of the changed lives of the characters. That last part in particular is quite important; the denouement should not only close out the current story but also acknowledge that life goes on beyond what’s shown on screen. This holds true as well for the show that I see as being greater than any of those mentioned above, FLCL. And for (at least, a classic narrative based show) a show to join the ranks of the elites, to be considered one of the greats, it needs to have such a strong denouement.

(Please note that this post contains spoilers to the endings to Bakemonogatari, The Tatami Galaxy, Strike Witches 2, Angel Beats!, Gunbuster, and various arcs of Amagami SS)

Summer 2010 Preview

Rakuen here, and it’s that time again.  Time to pretend we actually care about the new series for the Summer season.  Okay, the season really isn’t too bad, and all of us have found at least a few shows to watch.  Compared to the 34-show torrent introduced last season, we only have 18 new additions.  In some ways, I like a smaller season.  I felt overloaded during the Spring season with so many series I wanted to watch.   The horror genre has gotten some disproportionate representation, and we see the return of Digimon from a 3-year hiatus.  Three shows take place during the Sengoku period, including the titular Sengoku Basara.  In addition, AIC is going overboard this season with four new shows.  While we’re talking statistics, this post is 2635 words long!  So enough with the introduction, let’s get on with the series impressions!

Strike Witches 02-03 – guilty pleasures

This series is such a tease, such a guilty pleasure. I’m watching the release by StrikeS, who claims it’s all uncensored, which I assume means they’re drawing from the DVD versions instead of the web-release or TV-release episodes. (But I’m confused because ep3 still had the “We like to thank our sponsors” screen.) Well anyway, I’ll just believe I’m getting fewer sunbeams and fewer clouds blocking my view of the already ridiculous amount of pantsu in the show.

Strike Witches 01 – not what you’d expect

On the contrary, it might be everything you’d expect if you watched the preview commercials or saw the promotional posters. I was getting a little concerned and didn’t want to believe it, but alas…

Summer 2008 Anime Preview

It\'s summertime! Go outside and take your friends for a SPIN! (animooted)

… Huh. This season looks a little dry, ne?

But we’re (somewhat) confident that there will be at least one true gem this summer, though we can’t really agree on what it will be.

There’s a full list of this season’s anime here; naturally, we didn’t care to comment on them all.

Strike Witches OVA

I see ads about the TV anime coming soon in my magazines.  The characters listed on the official website (middle red button on the left column) look extraordinarily tasty — Perrine H. Clostermann being my initial favorite for megane + ojou-sama and potential for tsundere, and Francesca Lucchini in second place for twintail. And Wikipedia informs me that an OVA was out in January 2007. How failingly fail of me not to have picked up on that already. So off to the Internets I went, and now I’m ready to review it. Say hello to what will be the Sky Girls of 2008.
