Insider Trading in Redline: A Safer Way to Fix a Race

So I watched Redline last week, and it is one fine film, definitely worth checking out. But this post is specifically about one of the plot points in the movie: that protagonist JP and his partner Frisbee fix races for the mafia, which they do by having JP hang back until the last quarter of the race, suddenly take the lead, before ultimately losing the race. There will be some minor spoilers.

I got to thinking what kind of scheme the mafia had going that allowed them to profit from this situation, and what they needed JP to do. And it made me realize that, given JP’s capabilities, they could have fixed it a different way which would have allowed them to profit regardless of whether or not JP lost the race.

New York Anime Festival 2010 – Friday

This past weekend was the New York Anime Festival, which was combined with New York Comic Convention. Being located about 4 hours away in Boston and hearing that The Disappearance of Haruhi Suzumiya would be playing, I decided to make the trek down. Here is a chronicle of what I saw and experienced there. I originally intended to make one post, but the post on Friday alone was getting too long, so I’ll split this into two parts. Saturday and Sunday were much less eventful than Friday, so the second post may end up shorter than this one.

[Review] The Disappearance of Haruhi Suzumiya

Here’s the short version: whatever you’ve heard about it is true; it’s really that good. The Disappearance of Haruhi Suzumiya is an absolutely stunning film that succeeds on every level. It does not make up for the horrible second season, but if you liked the first season of The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya and long for more of something of that caliber, this is a must-watch. You will not be disappointed.

If you actually want me to expand on those thoughts, proceed downward (note: like any proper review, this will contain no spoilers, although I will delve into story bits when necessary).

Gurren Lagann movie is out!

Actually, it’s been out for a few days. But today’s the first day I glanced twice. And all I can say is, I can’t wait to see it for myself.

ANN: Two Gurren-Lagann Movies Planned (so far)

I FOUGHT THE POWER AND I WON

Gainax reps at Fanime just confirmed that there will indeed be (at least!) two Tengen Toppa Gurren-Lagann movies produced. EDIT: A Geek By Any Other Name has a eight-page write-up on the panel that says Gainax implied that the movies would have mostly new footage, with some old footage as well. More details may come eventually, but that seems to be all that was said at the panel.

I so called it liek a month ago. Did I NOT call it?

Bleach – Memories of Nobody in June

Via ANN.

The first Bleach movie will be playing in 300 theatres around the country on June 11 and 12. The event will include an interview with Noriyuki Abe, as well as a look at the movie’s talent. On the site there’s supposed to be a way to search for theaters in your area. It wasn’t working for me, so the complete list of theaters can be found by clicking here.

I’ll probably give the movie a shot if I find I’m not doing anything that weekend. I think Bleach is an okay series, and it’s not every day I get to see anime on a huge screen. I haven’t been keeping up with the series, but it’s a story disjointed from the series, so that’s fine. But, I think I’m supposed to be traveling up to northern Ohio for a boating trip. How about you readers? Did you already buy your tickets, are you thinking about going, or is Bleach just not for you? Post your thoughts, comments, and observations, but keep it civil please.

Evangelion 1.01 – You Are (not) Alone

I finally watched it over this past weekend with a bunch of friends, so now I’m going to take the opportunity to review it. For those not in the know, Gainax decided to redo all of Evangelion as four theatrical works. This is the first one, which covers episodes one through six, or in terms of angels, three through five. As for what angels are, they want to kill us, so we kill them back. That’s the most cursory explanation I can give, you’ll figure out their motivation much later. Now, onwards!

Go Speed Racer Go

So I went to see the Speed Racer movie today, and both my mom and I agreed that this was how a live-action anime film should be done. Fantasically done, it was pretty impressive they managed to pull all of this off in one movie.

Gurren-Lagann Movie Promo Video Posted

Title speaks for itself here, but it’s important to note that this won’t be out until September 6th. I didn’t think they’d have a promo out yet, but I do underestimate the industry sometimes. ;)

The promo’s nice, but it’s primarily (or entirely, not sure) footage from the series. Nothing stood out as new to me, though it’s a bit early in the game for that anyway. At 1:10 long, it basically highlights the epic moments of the pre-timeskip series and introduces the characters. Notably, though, I don’t recall seeing any post-timeskip footage.

Which makes it safe to ponder more than one TTGL movie is in the works. via ANN:

Gainax debuted the video at Tokyo International Anime Fair 2008 in late March; this first of several film remakes of the Gurren Lagann robot television series was pre-announced earlier that month with a website note for the event.
