Memory Quilt: Fushigi Yugi: The Mysterious Play

Another anime from my middle school days, Fushigi Yugi: The Mysterious Play

I loved this anime in 7th grade, I was obsessed with the character Chichiri, and my friends and I would talk about it constantly. I actually wanted to make the patch Chichiri, but I couldn’t find a Chichiri picture I wanted to use. Instead we have one of my other favorites, Nuriko the crossdresser.

The thing is, the first half of the series was honestly entertaining. It was engaging, and sometimes really funny. For example, the scene where a guardian spirit tells the main character Miaka she has to remove all her clothes before she can do the challenge. She strips down to her undies, and when the spirit demands her to remove all her clothing, she cries, “But this is the network limit!”

The latter half fell into Yu Watase’s problem of making her series too dramatic and too sappy. That and I swear, every character fell in love with Miaka. Which might not have been so annoying if a) I didn’t hate Miaka, and b) the only character she wanted was Tamahome. It was like the Jacob situation in Twillight, only about 5x worse.

I actually hated all the main characters in Fushigi Yugi, but what I loved were the quirky side characters.

Oh, and the english dub gets my award for one of the worst dubs ever. British Miaka what?
