Tonight I’m playing catchup on a series. You might remember my comment on railguns always being awesome in the Fall preview. I’m here to tell you that, is in fact, accurate. How about the rest of the series?

Can’t you just feel the awesome? Anyway, the story centers around a young man named Toma, stuck in a society filled with scientifically engineered humans. He’s got his own power, but no one else can readily detect it. His hand can disarm virtually any ability used on him. Unfortunately, it also curses him with horrible luck. He meets a young Nun names Index, and our story kicks off.

She has total recall, and has over a hundred thousand magical grimoires in her memory. Yeah, we’re combining science and magic in this series. Obviously, there’s a lot of people that would like to have that knowledge, so she’s being pursued. It’s not long until we meet our first antagonist, who is armed with high level fire abilities.

Our hero might lack luck, but he’s got a decent head on his shoulders. He manages to disarm his enemy’s trap and save the girl from immediate harm. Unfortunately, her wounds are serious, and there’s nothing he can do about it, since his power would stop any efforts to treat her. Which I can see leading up to an interesting dynamic of a hero that is ultimately powerless.

The character designs feel a little off to me, I can’t quite put my finger on why, but I can live with it. The animation is good, and the railgun lives up to my expectations. Also, it’s not something I notice a lot, but I did take note of the music and voice actor’s. Index’s voice is just so adorable, and I love the juxtaposition of that voice asking the hero if he’d like to follow her into hell. So, I’ll keep watching this to see where it goes.
Objectionable content: Magic based violence and blood. Also, there’s a lot of swearing.
Fu-fuun !
