[English Dub] Gurren-Lagann 01

AAAAAAAAAAAGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGHHHHHHHHHHH WHAT DID YOU TWITS DO WITH KAMINA’S MANLY GAR VOICE ToT;;;;;;;

*cough* The English dub of TTGL, which premiered on Sci-Fi last night, has been fairly well-received. It does, however, have some SERIOUS flaws, including how Kamina’s voice was cast. Purists should avoid this at all costs.

(Also, Sci-Fi’s online stream of the episode is crap; I couldn’t get past the first commercial and then it froze on me. >_>;;; But refreshing the page eventually fixed it.)

The good: Simon’s voice fits very well, and his lines are quite well-read. Yoko’s voice is a good fit as well, though her acting isn’t nearly as good and she doesn’t sound quite as loli-ish. The writing itself is fine, with enough of Kamina’s GARness (some profanity ^_^; ) left in to almost make up for his voice. The side characters are, for the most part, decently cast and acted as well.

The bad: Kamina’s voice is not nearly low and GAR enough, and some of his lines are poorly acted. A few side characters aren’t convincing. Some lines are changed from their famous originals; the new lines include “Bust through the heavens with your drill!” and “Kick logic out and do the impossible!” which are not nearly as awesome and catchy as they could have been.

Overall: It’s bearable if you haven’t watched the original Japanese, and you can get very used to it. Not horrible, but I’m still not watching the dub because Kamina’s voice got so messed up. 7.5 out of 10 California rolls.

    I had more of a problem with Yoko’s voice… I thought Kamina’s voice was just fine. And she never really sounded like a loli to me anyway @_@

    Look on the bright side, Simon still sounds manly. And Boota sounds like he just came out fresh from a Yu-Gi-Oh tourney.

    Usually I can give VAs a few episodes to really hit their characters, but Kamina really needs to be nailed in episode 2.

    It was actually the English version of this show that got me hooked, and I think I saw about the first 4 or 5 episodes, before I stopped watching it after I started back to school. Anyway I picked it back up after hearing a few of my college friends talking about it (this was about two years later), but I could only find the Japanese version (luckily with English subs). I watched all 27 of them and then decided to go back and look for the English version. I was so disappointed with it after watching the Japanese version, that I only watched part of the first episode and then quit watching it altogether. It seemed that Kamina had lost all the fire that he had from the Japanese version.
