Colossal 2008 Report

Wow, that was quite a convention. I was scheduled to do absolutely nothing but I ended up filling the weekend to the brim anyway. So let’s get on our way, shall we?

We arrived at the hotel in time to go to bed, at 4 AM. Friday morning was pretty slow, I got up and walked to the Subway down the road for some food, then came back to pick up my badge. Since they ran out of staff badges, they handed out guest badges instead. Of course, it would logically follow that I’d get badge checked constantly throughout the weekend. Anyway, we went to grab some more food and then came back for Con 101.

The panel went quite well for what I was there for. I had to leave halfway through to help my friend Faye get set up with a badge and our hotel room. From there we went to the game room to play Brawl for a bit, and then it was time to go to Whose Line. I’d say the show went quite well, I’ll post a more comprehensive writeup once the videos have finished uploading on Youtube.

Having accomplished that, we went back into the game room the wait it out until Ryzen’s panels started. He ran Dance 101 and Brawl 101 back-to-back. The former really focused more on the psychology of dancing. Don’t be afraid to dance, no one’s going to make fun of you. And if they do, well tell Ryzen and he’ll make them feel bad. He’s got the moves to back it up. For the Brawl panel we did some demonstrations with Ryzen playing against various people, including a battle to show how broken Snake was. Honestly, no character should ever be able to almost win a fight with one move. Then it was back to the games until we went to bed.

Saturday morning was the Pokemon photoshoot. Faye got up a bit late to make it on time, but fortunately we felt like running for a long time. When she arrived she pretty much got her own mini-photoshoot. Her Vaporeon cosplay is fantastic. We had a pretty small turnout, some of the people that planned to be there couldn’t quite make it. I still got a lot of great photos anyway. Here are the links (and yes, if you feel the need to friend me, you can):

Faye entered the Karaoke contest, and since I was there with camera in hand I decided I’d tape the whole thing. This meant I skipped out on Adult Swim, sorry guys, but I think this was more useful. I got videos of every performance except the first two of round two. Faye advanced to the second round, unfortunately, she didn’t win. I still liked her singing the best though. Again, I’ll have a more comprehensive post on this once the videos have finished.

We went to Rock Band Live next. Faye, Ryzen, Darrin, and Riley went on stage using their team name, The Donuts. They absolutely brought the house down, it was amazing. I’ve got a video of it to upload later, for now you’ll have to live with this picture. And yes, the room was so dark that I had to turn on night vision.

Following that, it was time to start thinking about the Brawl tournament. We pretty much ran the whole thing ourselves, with a little help from the staff. The cap was set at 128 people, and it was met with time to spare. People still wanted to signup, so we had them come down to Main with us and they recieved places from the no shows. The entire tournament took 6 hours to complete, and required a room change because Cosplay needed to set up. Faye placed 3rd and got a comp badge for next year, so congratulations to her! I have lots of videos of Faye and Ryzen playing to upload, if anyone wants them just ask. The results can be found at All is Brawl.

Then it was time for Whose Line Uncensored across the hall. Again, it was another great show. Unfortunately for you people, Kyo doesn’t allow people to post videos of the Uncensored show, so I didn’t record it. You’ll just have to come to a convention in Ohio to experience it yourself. The show ended at 1 AM, then we played around in the game rooms playing Rock Band and Brawl until hotel staff came to kick us out at 6.

Sunday went rather uneventfully. We woke up just in time to check out, then it was off to Ryzen’s final panel, DDR. Colossal scheduled a 1 hour panel for 2 hours, so a lot of it was just random stuff because it just couldn’t sustain itself. I’d still say it was a good panel though.

The game room shut down with closing ceremonies, so we spent our last few hours together talking and hanging around in the lobby. Every other convention I went to I was ready to go home at the end, this time, I really didn’t want to. We all said goodbye and went our separate ways. Hopefully we’ll be able to meet up again at Ikasucon in a few weeks.
