Kodomo no Jikan in US newspaper ad

Update: Unfortunately the ad is no longer there… I had wanted to include an image, but Photobucket was down, and I held the entry until I could get it uploaded. But now it’s too late, though I guess I could at least say I saw it.

Update 2: Found a video clip of a news program in Portland, Oregon. Apparently their local paper got the ad, too, and the reporters talk about a possible scam with this converter box. That would more easily explain the Kojika appearance.

Update 3: Found the ad again! I saved the whole image now.

A screenshot of Kodomo no Jikan appeared as a sample television image in a June 11 advertisement found on the Winston-Salem Journal, a local newspaper for the city of Winston-Salem in North Carolina, USA. (Other newspapers have the ad at an earlier or later date of their issues.)

By making your way from the main website to Shopping, then Newspaper Ads, then Shopping (category), then Computers & Electronics (subcategory), you can find the article for the Miracle ClearView TV.

(this is just a piece of the whole article/ad)

The most amusing part of it is that the above caption talks about parental controls, something any American parent would definitely want if shows like Kodomo no Jikan were on the air.

My guess is that someone is an anime fan in the newspaper staff (or the product staff who submitted the ad) but didn’t quite realize what this series is. Or, worse, it was an image that randomly came up in a Google search for “kids show” or something (that string didn’t turn up the result).

As for the product itself, you’d only be interested if you don’t pay for digital cable and just want the free local channels. Even then, the converter box is supposedly not a good deal.

Perhaps someone on staff is an anime fan, knows exactly what the show is about, and decided to see if they could get away with this. I’ve worked in ad departments for newspapers before, and I was sometimes tempted to do something similar.

    ….. WOW.

I think another good tag for this would be ‘lawl’. *edits*

Did you actually take that screencap yourself? @_@

I cut it from the images available (of the whole article and ad) on the Winston-Salem newspaper website when the ad was still there. I didn’t expect it to get taken down.

Been trying to look through the Net for images or video of the whole article…

We used to have one of those TV sets. I don’t know what would possess you to ever want to hook up any box to that model. XD

The dvd player isn’t even on…so how were they even watching kodomo no jikan? unless they have japanese satellite tv..(in which case they wouldnt need the converter lol)

after further thinking I’ve decided this is faked. There are only 3 days tehy could have that on their tv.

1.downloaded from comp and burnt (dvd is not on)

2.satellite (wouldnt need a converter..tho is is still possible since it’s just an ad…but i still doubt it)

    3. japanese dvds (HIGHLY unlikely)

    XDDDDDD

    Oh dear.

@ehhh: The ad is real, but the images on the TV are “fake.”

Have you ever tried to take a picture of a TV? The picture is either very dim or very pixelated (at least with old CRTs). So advertisers usually take a picture of a blank TV and then edit in an image later, so the ad looks prettier.

What we’re amused about is that the staff chose Kojika instead of, say, Bugs Bunny or Mickey Mouse.

Ok, is it really sad that I recognise that as the beginning part of the OVA before the OP starts?

    Parental Control LOLz! XD

The old man looks like he’s enjoying the pantsu shots more than the kiddies. The picture looks like one of those ads in architectural and interior design magazines from the late 80s with excellent clarity on the screen of that model. XD there are some things photoshop can’t hide.
