I’m quite tickled by this. While everyone in real life should hug and thank his or her mom today, in the anime world we get to celebrate the maternal beauties and how they’re still awesome despite not having magical powers or dedicated plotlines (and some actually do). So how many can I list…

Above is Kinomoto Nadeshiko. Kind and sweet and truly beautiful. I think, along with Shugo Chara’s Nadeshiko, that all characters with this name kind of embody the “perfect lady” archetype … at least as far as Eastern culture goes. While in Cardcaptor Sakura not much of Nadeshiko is known, she gains a reputation as the best mom and the kindest mom.

Daidouji Sonomi is a bit different; while she’s just as passionate about loving her children, she’s much more outspoken of a character. A friend of mine says the manga version of her is much better than the anime version, specifically calling her “MILF and cookies.” XD There’s a small fanbase exploring what could have been between the two, since Sonomi was pretty much in love with Nadeshiko, a deeper version of the quieter one-sided affection that Tomoyo has for Sakura (oh silly CLAMP).

Nanohaverse’s Lindy Harlaown should get more screentime, as you can’t have good green hair like that and not get to show it off all the time. She cares for Chrono well and also takes in Fate soon enough. A fun admiral of the TSAB who doesn’t know how to drink tea properly. Oh well. ^^ And I wonder if the markings on her forehead have magical significance.

Keeping with Nanohaverse, StrikerS boasts our title characters as total heartbreakers, because they’re already committed to each other. +1 daughter too. But that doesn’t keep the fandom from producing images like the above. These two moms are definitely magical — perhaps among the most powerful of anime characters; I know DKellis had been trying to map Nanoha into the HERO system of role-playing games.

Shakugan no Shana’s Sakai Chigusa has a lot of kind charm, staying faithful to a husband who’s seemingly never home, and being patient to his naive son and even more naive flame-haired girlfriend. But a pregnancy towards the end of season two proves that she isn’t completely selfless; moms like to have fun, too. …And sure we’ll throw in Wilhelmina, too, since she’s in the picture. Not an actual mom, but she’s sorta been one to Shana; not quite just a big-sister-figure. Wilhelmina also has had to deal with Shana’s developing emotions regarding Yuuji and her mission as a Flame Haze.

I think everybody fell in love with Kanata by episode 22 of Lucky Star if not sooner. She looks pretty much like Konata, long blue hair and extremely petite. And Soujirou denies he’s lolicon, heh. But she loved him because he would love her back more than any other man could, and that was all she needed. Kanata is also sweetly patient with all of her husband’s quirks; she just enjoys being with him. And Konata is perhaps the very next best thing that’s ever happened to her. Yay Izumi family.

And now the Key moms. Haruko of AIR drinks a lot and seems to have a warddrobe of only tank tops. Not that any of the bachelors mind! But underneath the extrovertedness is a side that tries its hardest to be motherly, and what a climactic scene the series had for her and Misuzu. Other than that she has kansaiben and rides a motorcycle: truly irresistible!

Beware Akiko’s jam. But it’s a small price to pay for her care. She may be aloof at first glance, but she’s plenty smarter than you think. Sweet, soft voice and a heart of gold, opening her home to anyone who needs it. She also has some arm strength, too, able to shovel a whole street of snow in no time. I’m sure she didn’t really need Yuuichi to get all those rice bags, but it was something useful for him to do so he doesn’t always mouth off to his harem.

Oh, Sanae. We will eat your bread every day; don’t you worry. If you’re able to make dough glitter like a rainbow it must be special enough to eat. (But maybe not octopus bread?) Your daughter inherited your moe-filled antennae, and you’d almost look high school age if it weren’t for Nagisa providing the proper contrast. I wonder if you learned all the dramatic poses of despair from Akio when he acted. Either way, you’ve tweaked it to melt gentlemen’s hearts without fail.

Plenty other moms I’ve left out (not counting the billions in eroge), but these are the ones that stand out to me so far. Hooray for all the support they give out to their lovely daughters (and Chrono and Yuuji *snerk*), and huzzah for looking absolutely killer in the process.

Nice nice post. xD Kinda ironic, I just finished blogging out the episode with this girl who has one of the worse mom’s I’ve seen in anime.
Epic Mother’s Day post. Which game’s the last picture from?
No idea; it came from the first page of Google results. And the website that hosted it is no help. Seems to be a few others here, though. Kinda cute.
Thanks, Owen. ^_^ (Jan, too!)
Instead of gushing about Fate, I will instead acknowledge that Sanae and Haruko are epic mothers that break the epic stratosphere with their epic motherlyness.
