Wagaya no Oinari-sama 02 & 03

Oinari-sama. Settling in our Home.

We start the episode meeting the brother’s father, who’s apparently perfectly fine with keeping a demon as a pet. I don’t know if I should laugh or be mildly disturbed by it. Kou seems to have no idea of how to react to the new social environment she’s been thrust into. Kuu is mystified by the television set. I guess it’s all to be expected for episode two of this series.

Oh yes, fun with gender-bending too. As Kuu said in the last episode, when you get to be its age, male and female just get in the way. So for now, she’s a he. Yeah… somehow I saw this coming. For simplicity’s sake, I will continue to use feminine pronouns. Anyway, Kuu needs to introduce herself to the God of the region to be able to use her magic effectively, so the search begins. It takes all of 30 seconds to run into the deity. He escorts the group to his shrine.

If you guessed ambush, you’re right! The God sends his two stone minions to attack Kuu, who’s reverted to her female form. She doesn’t have much problem resisting the beasts; unfortunately they just won’t stay down. Finally she reduces them to rubble with an incredibly powerful lightening Surge. Prepare for a bit of a surprise ending. You’d be surprised at what a divine being is capable of. Despite this, Kuu does get the blessing she needs, so all is relatively okay.

On to episode three.

Oinari-sama Goes to School.

The episode begins at the start of a new semester. Kuu’s ears prick right up hearing about school, so you can just bet she’s going to get involved, especially when her only company for the day is going to be Kou. By the way, Kou seems to be completely inept at anything that doesn’t directly involve magic.

Tooru doesn’t seem to be coping well with the changes to his life, so naturally the writers are going to make Kuu his responsibility. Kou and she barge in just when Sakura, a girl from school, is about to ask Noboru to accompany her on a date. Kuu asks to be shown around, and when Noboru thinks about what could happen if he sent then back home, he allows it.

Sakura’s understandably a bit freaked out by this, and walks around trying to figure out what exactly the relationship is between the three, with pretty comical results. The rest of the student body seems to love Kuu. But this wouldn’t be a proper episode without some kind of battle, at least up to this point. Three little male demons attack. Kuu plays with them for a bit, and then issues a spectacular beating.

At this point, the character’s personalities are pretty much cementing themselves. Kuu likes to have fun but knows when to get down to business. Noboru is incredibly responsible and worries about the smallest things. Kou is a complete klutz at everything. And Tooru, well, he acts like an eleven year old probably should. There’s humor and there’s action, but it feels like they’re trying to do too many things and so the quality is suffering across the board. I did both episodes today as a catch-up to episode 04 that was just released, so I’m still holding out hope for future episodes.

Episode rating: 7.5/10

Objectionable content: Same as the first episode and I have a feeling it’ll remain that way. Magic based violence with no blood.
