Sky Girls DVD Special 4

Awesome; Ayako is catching up with these. Four-minute shorts are so much fun. In this episode, the Sky Girls visit the Amazon Rainforest in search of pirahna. Unfortunately they get a little more than they expected. And Togo isn’t really all that pleased.

Summary

The girls and Togo search the rainforest for a fishing spot. Karen narrates the state of the Amazon River as the largest drainage basin in the world. However the Brazilian government has argued about discovering a new source for the Amazon, which would then make it a longer river than the Nile.

(There actually is some dispute going on — at least Brazilian scientists argue so. But the consensus is still that the Nile is the longest river in the world.)

Otoha laments on the trivia, saying Japanese students have it easy when it comes to trick questions about mountains and rivers. However Karen notes the importance of a region having a #1 something, as it promotes tourism.

Eika gets impatient and wonders when they’ll reach the river. But Karen then says they’ve arrived. It’s huge and raging.

People think pirahna are vicious, but they’re actually timid, so they always travel in groups. So the strategy is to strike the surface of the water to lure the pirahna to the surface. The splashing makes them believe a weak fish (prey) is flailing about at the surface, so they approach.

Karen demonstrates hitting the water with a stick, but for some unexplained reason she gets really into it. And she doesn’t stop for the remainder of the episode.

A rumbling occurs, and Togo thinks it’s The Lord again. But Eika says is the Pororoca. She instantly summons a surfboard and runs off. Otoha gives Togo a life ring, but he is still confused as the tidal waves wash over him.

So everyone goes surfing on the Amazon River. No actual fishing is done. End.

Impressions

Not much of tsundere Eika today. The episode seemed to be more about Karen with all the narration she got in this episode. But it’s funny how she just ripped that surfboard out of hammerspace. I’m sure she had wanted to catch pirahna, but since Pororoca was here, why the heck not? She can do that first.

Karen was really cute today. I totally want a GIF of her with the XD face and hitting the water with a stick repeatedly. And we did get smart!Karen at the beginning, too, with her long explanation about the Amazon and its environment.

Otoha took a backseat to this episode, getting a few lines but not impacting so much. At least she was proactive about surfing and did as well as Eika.

Togo seemed to be forced comedic relief this episode. –Well, they’re all funny, but Togo had to play the bored/annoyed one. Usually he has as much fun as the rest of them. You know, with how hot the Amazon is, he could take off that jacket… This is at least one scenario where the motionslits seem appropriate (but still not really).

I love these little bonus episodes. Again, I get to hear the soundtrack more. And motionslits are sekushi, even if totally out of context. I guess I can tolerate the art style. If anything, they’re drawn more realistically I guess, instead of having anime-typical stick-thin figures. But hooray for all the education.

And we get a little baby worm again, too, not in the form of sushi this time. But it’s funny how these specials are kinda treating them as a normal form of life rather than mankind’s enemy.
