Been waiting so long for this! Now that the TV episodes have finished, I’m eager for any bit of new Sky Girls, even if I might have criticized the animation a bit in my review of DVD Special 2. But now I don’t have anything to compare it to, so bring on the delicious motionslits.
Anyway, the adventures of Fishing Maniac Eika continue! This episode, WORM sushi and some awesome deredere.
Synopsis
Eika grimaces at a plate of WORM sushi, but she eventually sucks it up and eats it.
As she wisely gazes at the ocean in motionslit and fishing hat, Karen narrates a good way to catch blackfish.
Later Otoha wonders why Eika hasn’t done any fishing today. She guesses that Eika hasn’t overcome her fear of live bait yet, but Eika responds that most things like squid and octopii can be caught without live bait anyway.
Togo walks up and … flirts with Eika? Deredere blush scene happens. Otoha misses the beat. But before we get more of that, a HUEG blackfish appears, with everyone calling it “THE LORD”. Eika immediately jumps up to take action, hooking a towel to her fishing line and throwing it over the blackfish’s eyes. This apparently tames it, and the crisis is averted.
Later that evening, as the girls have dinner at the pier, Karen shares the sea slug she caught earlier. It squishes around scarily, and Eika is quite uncomfortable. But she’ll try to press forward anyway.
Impressions
So cute! My favorite character is still Eika, and these specials really keep playing on her best qualities. She’s so calm and cool and collected at first, but there are many hidden insecurities. She hates live bait, and therefore raw food like WORM sushi (wtf, that can’t possibly taste good). And there’s play on the TogoxEika pairing, which I love. Otoha remains unaware, and hooray for Karen appearing, too. They’re just all great. I hope we get Elise soon.
The sea slug creeps me out, moreso because the animators really drug it out with how it twitches in Karen’s arms. I guess if she likes it….
And the constant motionslit wearing is shameless fanservice. I’m pretty sure they’d rather wear them as little as possible, perhaps because they’re not as comfortable as normal clothing .. and then how revealing they are, too, of course. Plus the military wouldn’t want them to wear out for no good reason. But to heck with logic in an OVA for fans.
“Oh my Jesus!” The Engrish in this episode seems hilariously forced. XD I wonder if any of those lines have really been said by Japanese before. And then finally, Karen’s sadistic-sounding laugh as she held a .. seemingly-melting sea slug was frightening. I’m probably missing an in-joke with that.
Anyway, it was a great five minutes! And I still want a spinoff series based on all the new girls introduced in the last episode sometime…
