Clannad 23 – Mei-chan kawaii~

Nagisa and Tomoya? Whatever. This one’ll be all about Mei-chan. She made this episode great and totally stole my heart. Although I guess Nagisa and Tomoya did have lots of cute stuff going on. It was almost stereotypical romance all over again from the shy handholding to everyone else playing matchmaker for them. But I did enjoy the cinnamon scene as well.

Mei love

Sunohara Mei gets tons of screentime as she plays cupid and tries to get Tomoya and Nagisa closer together. This leads to much much moe and swooning on my part as Mei shows off her strengths and quirks and good intentions. Her efforts are mostly successful, but I wouldn’t have been disappointed even if they failed.

Neko-Mei-chan? Oh please, more. Such mischief! I never would have expected this from the earlier episode in the season. Mei was so responsible then, cleaning up her onii-chan’s mess and always looking for the right ways to solve a problem. Well apparently the more accurate answer is that Mei looks for the most efficient way to solve a problem, even if it means a little bit of choice advertising.

She wasn’t lying, though, because she and Nagisa are definitely cute girls running the store. It just so happens not to be the store all the guys were wishing it would be. But Nagisa’s cuteness compels them to buy some bread anyway, if only just to interact with her and hear a rewarding “Arigatou gozaimasu!” after their purchase.

Now the better question is how so many single guys just happened to be walking down the street that afternoon…

Tomoya is displeased (with a very Kyon-like face) at Mei’s actions, but I don’t care. Mei definitely is Sunohara’s sister with a clearly present humor gene. I wouldn’t be surprised if she were the sidekick to one of her closests friends in junior high. Except she wouldn’t be the one who gets hurt for the sake of humor.

While Tomoya dislikes Mei’s pandering to male desires, he approves of her blatantly lying to Sanae about her bread. But she does it so well; how many other lies has she told?! But it’s a conflict-free solution, and she even gains more cute points in the process. How very cunning… Is it a good idea to have her as a little sister after all?

Ascaloth was really comparing her to Kyon no Imouto. That’s totally fine, because both do have very spirited, somewhat mischevious attitudes. And I’d love to have both as my own. Well, more Mei; she’s a whole lot more responsible, heh (but I think she’s older, too). Plus the mischief that Mei creates is much more interestingly challenging, unlike Kyon no Imouto who would run around with scissors or jump on your bed until you woke up in the morning.

I totally melted here. Hair-down pajama’d Mei is far more adorable than I expected. This definitely confirms how I like it much more than twintails, but it works best with normally twin-tailed characters because of the contrast. And you can tell from the way she’s drawn plus the body figures of Tomoya’s current harem, Mei will very soon grow up to join Tomoyo and the others.

Pout! I missed this the first time watching through. Poor, poor Youhei to be booted out of his own room; of course he’d stand there and stare at her. But her annoyed face was more serious, and thus she won the fight.

Shoulders… Heck, the overalls, period. How does KyoAni succeed in making her so irresistible?! Even Kokoro-chan, backed by all the fanservice that School Days packs, can’t possibly be as cute as Mei.

Blushing! Now Tomoya’s little fantasy of MeixSunohara I probably shouldn’t comment on. Rather I’m quite surprised Mei wasn’t more upset about being objectified like that or put into such a weird situation … and also how excited Tomoya got about it (unless that was SS-Eclipse taking a little bit of liberty with the translation). Because he hasn’t made such comments–at least not so directly–about the other girls, even when he momentarily considered Kyou in the shed.

That’s it. After I finish Kyou when playing the visual novel, I’m going to hunt down as many of the Mei scenes in the game as possible. I hope she gets to be on the cover of one of the DVDs.

End fanboyism for now.

Everything else

Yeah I suppose everyone (who didn’t know about the scene beforehand) was expecting a kiss, as totally-off-the-wall as it would be. But I wanted to believe it; that’d be very brave of Nagisa to execute Mei’s master plan. However she instead … breathed in Tomoya’s face. o.o Oh wow. The deadpan look in response just made people like Shirukii die of laughter. Tomoya “looked like he wanted to facepalm through his skull, but was paralyzed by how terrible the scenario at hand was. It was an amazing Kyon-like moment….” I confess I didn’t laugh out loud, but my mouth was probably open a bit in utter surprise of the whole situation.

Oh dear goddess. Something actually topped Rainbow Bread. …..I can’t even look at that for a decent length of time before thinking of how sickening it must taste. And Akio had to chase after Sanae with it dangling from his mouth. x.x

Don’t worry, Kyou, I haven’t forgotten you. I’m glad you got some screentime. And it’s great that you continue to battle Tomoyo. It’s really for the fans, I guess, although she does have a point as to why Tomoyo just happens to eat lunch with all of them so often. She really is Tomoya’s friend more than theirs.

So this is the infamous SEEN_666 with the Sunohara end. Creepy, creepy.

And in the end, we get that After Story promo to completely confirm the news for those who haven’t yet heard about it in the last day or two. Production in progress? When will it come out? And is KyoAni taking a break for now until the summer? I guess they deserve it. But what about Haruhi II?
