Gurren-Lagann English Dub Trailer

FIGHT THE POWAH

I’m slow to report on this atrocity, but ADV has reportedly released a trailer for their upcoming release of Gurren-Lagann. I say ‘reportedly’ because the trailer in question is, quite frankly, a load of crap. I truly hope for ADV’s sake that they’re NOT serious.

The trailer pretty much flat-out states that the series is about girls with guns (and the resulting fanservice) robots, explosions, and killing cute animals. The narration is a cheesy crappy ‘manly’ voice and (hopefully) not a demonstration of the dub.

Especially when compared to the original Japanese version, this trailer does not accurately represent all that is Gurren-Lagann. The trailer contains no Kaminaisms, no Kittan or Nia (I’m assuming episode 4 is on the first disk at least?!) and no mention of “Aniki!” (or whatever the heck they’re going to translate it as.) Perhaps the trailer is only supposed to cover the first few episodes, but that still does not explain the lack of Kamina-ness.

The trailer does have its cute (read: mildly funny) moments, with gems like this tossed around on occasion:

“A boy becomes a man! A man becomes intimidated! And a woman, uh… becomes whatever she wants.”

Nice one, ADV.

This atrocity (gosh I love that word) brought to you by JapanAttack! and the sharp watchful eyes there that belong to a person less clueless than I.

PS – There’s been a ton of rumors flying around lately regarding a second season of TTGL. Hmmm….

    You kidding? That was an awesome trailer, right down to the “Monster Trucks” narrator.

    I don’t mind the cheesy overtones either considering the anime they’re presenting.

    To be honest, that trailer isn’t as bad as the original Kanon trailer. Although, I laughed pretty hard when I heard “Grin Login!”. Come on ADV. You’d think you’d learn something from “The Melancholy of Huraihi Suzumiya.”

    I thought that was great. xD The trailer is definitely not misleading – it seems to take the mood from the first five or so episodes and runs with that, instead of saying KAMINA DIIIIES, SO GET READY TO BAWWWW.

    Crap, the only thing I didn’t like was how they said Evangelion. It’s pronounced with a hard “G”, like in “green”! Hahaha.

    BOUNCE.

    @Sagacious C: I wouldn’t mind the cheesy overtones either if there was more Kamina and less Gainax bounce.

    @koneko-chan: Original Kanon trailer? Never seen it, but if they really messed it up it would be hilarious. ^_^;

    @rebmastu: Sure they got the cheesy overtones part right, but they pretty much nixed everything else awewsome about there series. Kamina, Kittan, the whole awesomeness at the beginning with Simon and Kamina leaving their old life behind… the trailer would totally hook non-fans if it still had those things. Now the series just looks kinda lame.
    But you’re right about the fricking Evangelion pronunciation. >_>;

    Who’s ready for some GRAN LOGINN?!

  8. February 25, 2008 at 9:13 pm

    Meme alert. XDDDDD GRAN LOGINN FTW!

    Though some might argue it’s “GRIN LUGGIN!!!!!!” ^_^;;

    @CJ: You should know how to pronounce that. You screamed it every time those people went by our table with their flag.

    @Jen: Haha, that was more awesome than Kamina pimppunching Simon… hahaha…. *fangirl spiral!*

    It’s obviously “Grin Loggin”…as in the facial expression, followed by the cutting down of trees.

    Mebbe it’ll be subtitled only – Diebuster, er, Gunbusters 2, anybody?

    @Anon: Gurren-Lagann has that kooky expression on its face, and it’s fully capable of cutting down trees! It fits perfectly! xD

    @CWR: Interesting point. I’d take subs-only over nothing. >_<;

    I thought it was funny, but it kinda portrays the show wrongly. A friend of mine won’t watch it because she saw the opening and thinks it’s…only about the things they said in the trailer and it’s not, really!!

    although the GRANNN LOGINNNNNNN made my day
    if you watch like
    a couple episodes at least you’d know how to say it MY GOSH haha

    Well, the dub is decent… too bad they turned “go beyond the impossible and kick reason to the curb” into “make the impossible possible”.

  17. July 29, 2008 at 10:37 am

    @Qmarx: Waaaaaait, they CHANGED that? You’re kidding me. >_>; I wonder what else they changed, then? Whatever, I’m getting the subtitled boxsets.
