RotW: ‘Meikyuu Butterfly’ English Translation

Nana Mizuki has completely won me over with her newest song, Meikyuu Butterfly, which is an insert song for Shugo Chara! The only problem is that I can’t find an English translation for it anywhere. (Maybe I’m just looking in all the wrong places…?)

So, I randomly decided to test my rapidly-growing knowledge of Japanese by translating this version of the romaji; however, I am an amateur, so this translation is probably fairly weak. I did it in about 3 hours with help from Jeffery’s Japanese-English Dictionary.

I did have a lot of fun, though, so if you request a translation VERY nicely, and it’s proven to be impossible to find via Google or Animelyrics.com, then I’ll see about doing it.

PS- If something is wrong in this translation, PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE correct me. I want to learn from this. Expect major revisions as my skills improve and I get feedback. Also, translator’s notes at the bottom.

‘Meikyuu Butterfly’ by Nana Mizuki
Shugo Chara! Episode 12 Insert Song

Lyrics: PEACH-PIT, Saitou Megumi
Music: dAicE

Open your shiny eyes in the silent night [1]
The wonderous night swooped down
filled with the sound of footsteps
from a stealthy, desirous black cat’s paws.

The floating silhouette in the moonlight
said ‘Let’s go this way’ with a beckoning smile
A shadow of desire covered the squirming city
as the wandering angel descended. [2]

The shards of love in the precious thoughts I cradled in my arms
weren’t of our destination

When the time comes when you’re also sleeping somewhere,
are you dreaming sweet dreams?
Kiss me as we rest in the starry sky; the ‘good girl’ has said good night

Don’t watch, don’t seize
the lost butterfly
The wings in your concealed chest sing of freedom
even for the people who can’t see them

The face reflected in the mirror was
a crybaby back then,
but I’m not a child now.
I undo my now-long hair

My chest tightens as I realize
a sweet fragrance is tempting me
The lost words were magically put on my lips

Don’t watch, don’t seize
the lost butterfly
Go past the precious things, go past the important things
Break and destroy the key to my heart

I continue to search for my own story
Until the blindfold that conceals my fate is removed
I’ll pierce through these clouds with my wings and go to the distant tomorrow

Don’t watch, don’t seize
the lost butterfly
These targeted, feathered wings will take a long leap [3]
unseen, out of your concealed chest.

Notes:

Title note: Translates to ‘Mystery Butterfly’ or ‘Labrynth Butterfly.’
[1] This line is completely in English in the romaji lyrics.
[2] – Technically, I’m not sure if ‘samayoi,’ which I think is ‘wandering,’ is even an adjective, much less supposed to be describing the angel. Its use in this line was odd to me. It may be the speaker instructing someone to wander; this line is probably gonna get major revisions later once I figure it out.
[3] – I could not get the original Japanese to make much sense in this line and the line below it. I improvised with what little order I could make of the words. I’m pretty sure that the ‘out of your concealed chest’ is right, though.

EDIT: Fixed several lines that really needed fixing T_T;

It’s never a good idea to translate with only the romaji on hand. I’ll give the song translation with a shot and post the result on my lyrics site.

@Atashi: Atashi-san~! <3 The romaji link included above had the kanji too; I used that when I wasn’t 100% positive on something.

I can’t wait to see what you come up with!

I think you did good in translating it, and it does make sense.

I can just tell the black cat’s paws are referring to Yoru or Ikuto, lol.

@AiChan: ‘Meikyuu’ can mean either ‘mystery’ or ‘labyrinth.’ ‘butterfly’ of course, means ‘Butterfly.’ xD ;)

If you know the whole song and the anime then it makes sense.

The Key inside my heart – The words to be able to say ‘Heart Unlock’
The Wandering Angel – In the shugo chara story Utau has a Angel Shugo Chara who she hates. This angel wanders around to find a truth and see if anyone wants her which is when she finds amu-chan. A.k.a Eru the wandering angel.
Black Cat – Refering to her want-to-lover or also known as ikuto who has the shugo chara of a black cat and one of his weapons is to get a huge black paw that let me just say you don’t wanna be swiped with.
The Butterfly – The butterfly refers to your chara and want-to-be self. Saying how it can make your free like a butterfly. The shugo chara’s also float.
The Crybaby – When Utau was a child she had a hard life and constantly was lonely.
This good girl has gone bad – Well she was once on the side of the guardians as a child but then she signed a contract with easter and also she has a devil shugo chara that is always cruel to everything it sees.
Magically on my lips – When they transform they have words. Exp: Drew,Drawn,Draw.
The Night – The evil easter company.
This Lost Butterfly – Her being lost in her emotion and physical state. A.k.a not knowing what to do and feeling sad.
Don’t seize – Don’t capture me and let me be free.

Technically this is a cry of help for someone to help her really but ethier way if it doesn’t make sense in other peoples eyes I still love it!

Very nice analysis of the song you have there. Peach-Pit also did a good job of writing the song by inputing the hidden meanings. The only thing I could take from the song was “black cat” as Ikuto.
