The latest episode of Dragonaut, despite its ’startling revelations,’ once again fails to live up to my expectations. I guess expecting it to be like Eureka Seven was a little much. Despite the similiarities between the two series, it was Eureka Seven’s occasional hilarity that helped make it a hit. Dragonaut, though, takes itself too seriously, and is sometimes far from believable.
Case in point: Kazuki and Jin’s promise to each other to become astronauts. (Yes, that’s what inspired the title for this post.) Basically, Jin and Kazuki lay up on a hill looking at the stars when they were little, and talked about wanting to be astronauts, so they made a little promise together. How cute and cliched. It’s mildly believable, since they were little boys, after all… but it’s still been done in almost every anime out there. (Funny thing is, I don’t think FMA ever used that cliche.)
Of course, the writers used this promise to give modern-day Jin and Kazuki a conflict. Kazuki expects Jin to keep that promise, but Jin already quit the astronaut academy thing after (you guessed it) his dad’s accident. The whole thing is a little bland and forced, and Kazuki’s pretty annoying for only episode 2.
And now I can’t review the rest of the episode without giving big spoilers. (I LOVE those sort of episodes.) I will say, though, that now we don’t know what will happen with Toa, since she’s *spoiler* and the ISDA place that wants Jin is *spoiler* The various twists throughout the episode almost make up for the various cliches; and, in all honesty, I can’t wait to find out what the crap is up with Toa. And the other characters, for that matter; because as annoying as Kazuki is to me, I want to see what his real motives are.
Hopefully, though, next week’s episode won’t contain THIS:
or THIS:
AAARRRRGGGGGHHHHHHHWTF.
